Al-Ghannushi lashes out at Iran for backing Assad regime

Prior to President Abdullah Gül’s visit to Tunisia, a prominent scholar and leader of the Tunisian Ennahda movement -- which came to power in the first free elections following Tunisia’s revolution -- vehemently criticized the Iranian stance towards the nearly one-year old crisis in Syria that seems likely to continue for the foreseeable future.

In an exclusive interview with Today’s Zaman on Wednesday, Ennahda leader Rashid al-Ghannushi touched upon a wide range of issues such as the new constitution in Tunisia, bilateral relations between Turkey and his country and regional politics in the Middle East.

 

Discussing his concerns over possible sectarian tension that could be ignited by Iranian-Syrian solidarity across the Middle East, al-Ghannushi noted that he is uneasy about the future of the region.

 

Regarding speculations suggesting that Iran aims to spread the influence of so-called Shia crescent throughout the region, al-Ghannushi said he has concerns over Iranian backing of the Bashar al-Assad regime through sectarian solidarity.

 

Although Iran is a “country of revolution,” al-Ghannushi noted (referring to the 1979 Iranian revolution), the country is doing wrong by standing against a revolution in Syria. Iran, he added, should stand by the Syian people rather than the regime.
