العماد فهد جاسم الفريج (1 يناير 1950)، وهو من مواليد قرية الرهجان التابعة لناحية الحمرا في لمحافظة حماة الواقعة في وسط سوريا. ولم يكن معروفا كثيرا قبل عدة سنوات ولكنه في العام 2005 أصبح أحد نواب رئيس هيئة الأركان. وعين في بداية الأزمة السورية رئيسا لهيئة الأركان خلفا لداوود راجحة الذي أصبح وزيرا للدفاع. تم تعيينه يوم الأربعاء 18 يوليو 2012 قائداً عاماً للجيش والقوات المسلحة ووزيراً للدفاع بعد مقتل راجحة في تفجير مبنى الأمن القومي السوري .

Fahd Jassem al-Freij (born 1 January 1950) is the Minister of Defense of Syria, taking office on 18 July 2012.

Freij was born in Hama to a Sunni family on 1 January 1950. He joined the Syrian Arab Army in 1969, and graduated as a armoured lieutenant from the Military Academy of Homs in 1971.

Political career

On 8 August 2011, al-Freij was appointed Chief of Staff of the Syrian Arab Army during the Syrian uprising. In December 2011, defected Syrian Army officers reported that prior to his appointment of Chief of Staff, al-Freij commanded the Syrian Army Special Forces in the regions of Daraa, Idlib and Hama during the Syrian uprising. In February 2012, it was reported that al-Freij's authority had been undermined and restricted by President Bashar al-Assad's inner circle and subsequently divided up between numerous other commanders of the Army.

However, on 18 July 2012, after Defense Minister Dawoud Rajiha was assassinated in the 2012 Damascus bombing, al-Freij was appointed by Bashar al-Assad to succeed Rajiha.He was also named as Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Army and the Armed Forces.
