Gaza – Ma’an – Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh issued a call for further dialogue with the rival Fatah movement on Tuesday, blaming “external intervention” for an impasse in talks. Haniyeh, the elected prime minister and currently the head of the de facto government in Gaza, said that the talks with Fatah had reached “a good point,” and that their success is necessary. “The challenges facing the Palestinian people and their cause are much greater than internal disagreements,” said Haniyeh speaking at a Gaza press conference. The press conference was held after Haniyeh hosted an international solidarity delegation in Gaza City. “Two problems are impeding Palestinian national dialogue; external intervention, and approaching dialogue having in mind that Gaza is the problem only,” Haniyeh explained. He pointed out that Hamas movement would be willing to reach a comprehensive ceasefire binding to both it and Israel, highlighting that Egyptian efforts are ongoing in that regard as well as on a proposed prisoner swap deal.
