Wellington, Aug 29 NZPA - Taxpayers will be saved nearly $20 million over the next five years through a new government car-buying process, Economic Development Minister Gerry Brownlee says. "The Government is getting serious about using procurement to increase efficiency and save money," he said today. "The vehicle contracts will save $18.5m -- about 8 percent -- on current vehicle expenditure while improving safety and environmental standards."
Under the new all-of-government approach there would be agreed prices for cars and discounts on some of them. Mr Brownlee said he was going to make sure departments needed the cars they were buying and were using them efficiently. The car contract was one of several that, together, were expected to save more than $115m over the next five years, Mr Brownlee said. A contract for office supplies was announced i. July and contracts for computers and printers would be announced soon.
