Bin Shamlan may have lost, but democracy won

Faisal Bin Shamlan 48%

The Joint Meeting Parties threw a reception for its presidential candidate, Faisal bin Shamlan, on Monday, to thank him for running in the September 20 election. We would like to add our voices to theirs, because it was bin Shamlan who made these recent elections a real political contest.

And a real political contest is what democracy is all about. Of course, it took more than one man to make the elections run as smoothly as they did, and we would also like to express our appreciation for every single candidate who ran for every single office, from local all the way up. We thank the Independents, the Islah Party, the Socialists, the GPC and every other party who fielded and supported candidates. We applaud the courage of those women who took the initiative and ran in the elections, whether they won or lost.

Let’s not forget the international and donor community and as well as the international media and election observers for their contribution to making this historic event a real success. The election process may not have been perfect. There were myriad violations at the polls, and women were dramatically underrepresented. But Yemen has achieved what so many of its neighboring countries have failed to do; it has allowed an opposition party to come forth and speak out against the ruling party, without fear of reprisal.

At Monday’s reception, bin Shamlan said that the people of Yemen were actually thinking ahead of the election campaigns. Their turnout at the polls suggested that they were desperate for change, he said. President Saleh has said on more than one occasion that Yemen is the actual winner in this democratic experience. While this may, in many cases, be true, the people evidently aren’t ready for too much change, all at once. But simply having a real, contested election is a change in itself. Actually electing a new president will have to be left to the future.

Bin Shamlan and the JMP decried the election violations, but they have done the right thing by accepting the election results and allowing the country to move peacefully forward. It is our hope that the parties’ rancor over their differences expanded during the election campaigns will evolve into peaceful and cooperative dialogue, as they turn toward the future. And eventually, . hese political conversations will lead to an even more interesting—and even more contested— election process the next time around.
