While the rest of the world celebrated Christmas on Tuesday, the recent election losing Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) named its new leader. Banri Kaieda, a former trade minister, vowed to keep the party from collapsing after its loss to the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) after only three years in power. Kaieda is replacing the outgoing Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, who stepped down as party chief in order to take responsibility for the crushing election defeat.

 

Kaieda said that the DPJ must not be erased, and must continue to be an opposing force the LDP, which, until 2009, was Japan’s controlling party for more than five uninterrupted decades. The DPJ election didn’t involve all supporters, instead only holding the poll among those serving in parliament – 57 Lower House members, and 88 from the Upper House. Critics remain skeptical that Kaieda rebuild the party, citing that the upcoming election for the Upper House wil. most likely see the DPJ lose seats.
