More then 100% voted in 50 cities

Iran's Guardian Council has suggested that the number of votes collected in 50 cities surpass the number of people eligible to cast ballot in those areas. The council's Spokesman Abbas-Ali Kadkhodaei, who was speaking on the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) Channel 2 on Sunday, made the remarks in response to complaints filed by Mohsen Rezaei -- a defeated candidate in the June 12 Presidential election. "Statistics provided by the candidates, who claim more than 100% of those eligible have cast their ballot in 80-170 cities are not accurate -- the incident has happened in only 50 cities," Kadkhodaei said. Kadkhodaei further explained that the voter turnout of above 100% in some cities is a normal phenomenon because there is no legal limitation for people to vote for the ...

Iran's contested elections

The crisis of legitimacy that has been unfolding in the wake of Iran's contested elections is one that cannot be expressed through simplistic nostrums. The social and political tensions that have been building since the Islamic revolution have gained pace since the emergence of the Reformists as a serious political force. What they speak to are a set of concerns that can only be understood in an Iranian context. The problems encompassed include the pressing issue of how to reconcile the increasingly conflicted question of how people behave in private in their homes and in the more restrictive public spaces. There is the tension, too, that has been growing for over a decade between the concept of velayat e-faqih - clerical jurisprudence - and the desire for more meaningful democratic ...

Khamenei tells Mousavi to toe the line over election

The moderate Iranian leader who says that he was robbed of victory in last week’s presidential election faces a fateful choice today: support the regime or be cast out. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, has told Mir Hossein Mousavi to stand beside him as he uses Friday prayers at Tehran University to call for national unity. An army of Basiji — Islamic volunteer militiamen — is also expected to be bussed in to support the Supreme Leader. The demand was made at a meeting this week with representatives of all three candidates who claim that the poll was rigged, and it puts Mr Mousavi on the spot. He has become the figurehead of a popular movement that is mounting huge demonstrations daily against the “theft” of last Friday’s election by ...

Iran’s supreme leader backs poll result

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned the leaders of those protesting against the presidential elections that they would be held responsible for the unrest. In a speech delivered during Friday prayers ,Ayatollah Khamenei insisted that the election result was fair and delivered the strongest approval yet of the declared winner, Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad.The comments, designed to end the wave of protests that has rocked Iran over the past week, will come as a huge disappointment to the supporters of Mir-Hossein Moussavi, the reformist leader and candidate who says the election was stolen. The speech also delivers a chilling message to western governments that have seen the protests as having shaken the foundations of the Islamic regime.“It is a wrong imagination if some think they can create a ...

The players in Iranian society

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, is the country's most powerful figure. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has been Iran's president since 2005, was actively involved in the Islamic revolution and was a founding member of the student union that took over the US embassy in Tehran in 1979. But he denies being one of the hostage-takers. Mir Hossein Mousavi former prime minister stayed out of politics for some years but returned to stand as a moderate. The Iranian reform movement is a political movement led by a group of political parties and organizations in Iran who supported Mohammad Khatami's plans to introduce more freedom and democracy. The armed forces comprise the Revolutionary Guard and the regular forces. The two bodies are under a joint general command. The Revolutionary Guard ...

Suspicious Patterns in the Iranian Election Results

In examining the provincial breakdown of the Iranian election results, I noticed some strange things.First, while Mousavi was leading Ahmadinejad by 2 to 1 in Tehran in a poll last week, Ahmadinejad won Tehran 52% to 46% in the reported election results. In an authoritarian state, one would expect polling to understate the popularity of the opposition.More seriously, the great enthusiasm and strong turnout in the election was presumed to be from those voting for Mousavi and change, but the official turnout in areas that favored Ahmadinejad most strongly was much higher than in areas where Mousavi did relatively well. Here is the breakdown in the six provinces with turnouts over 90% (91.6% - 99.4% turnouts):Ahmad. 68, Mousavi 31Ahmad. 56, Mousavi 42Ahmad. 46, Mousavi 34Ahmad. 68, Mousavi ...

Ahmadinejad Declared Winner In Iran Elections

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says his overwhelming re-election was "free and healthy" and a reflection of the popular will. Ahmadinejad rejected allegations of vote fraud by his nearest rival, whose supporters clashed with police in the streets of Tehran on Saturday, a day after the election.Election officials said Ahmadinejad gained more than 62 percent of the vote, compared with nearly 34 percent for his main rival, former prime minister Mir Hossein Mousavi. Mousavi issued a statement after the results were declared calling the count a "dangerous charade," and accusing the government of "manipulating" the vote.U.S. officials reacted cautiously. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs issued a statement saying "like the rest of the world, we were impressed by the vigorous debate and ...

Withhold Recognition of Iranian Presidential Election Result

The international community should not recognize the results of Iran’s 12 June 2009 presidential election, which gives all signs of having been manipulated by government authorities to produce a massive victory for incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, according to the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran. The Campaign further recommended that the existing results be voided and new elections held in order to establish legitimacy. As the Campaign reported earlier, the leading challenger to Ahmadinejad, Mir Hossein Moussavi, was informed by Iran’s Interior Ministry at 23:00 on 12 June that tabulated results showed him to be victor, and he was asked to wait on celebrations until Sunday.A few hours later, the Ministry inexplicably reversed itself declaring a massive victory for ...
