Climate change is any long-term significant change in the “average weather” that a given region experiences. Average weather may include average temperature, precipitation and wind patterns. It involves changes in the variability or average state of the atmosphere over durations ranging from decades to millions of years. These changes can be caused by dynamic processes on Earth, external forces including variations in sunlight intensity, and more recently by human activities. In recent usage, especially in the context of environmental policy, the term "climate change" often refers to changes in modern climate (see global warming). For information on temperature measurements over various periods, and the data sources available, see temperature record. For attribution of climate ...

Significant uncertainties of climate change triggers

There might be feedbacks in the climate system that we aren't aware of yet. The amount of carbon in the oceans and atmosphere changes suddenly and dramatically. The oceans are acidified and significant extinctions result. On land, global temperatures increase anywhere from five to nine degrees Celsius, causing widespread habitat disruptions. Despite the sudden onset of the event, its impact lingers for 100 thousand years. his might sound like a worst-case situation for the current anthropogenic influences on climate, but it's actually an historic event that the public is generally unaware ...

Global warming is real

There is "absolutely no scientifically proven basis for the premise that man can affect what the climate does" is absurd. Our libraries are full of carefully compiled and critically reviewed scientific research that makes it clear that global warming is real, is caused by human activity and is significantly and rapidly changing the world's climate. The research conclusions of dozens of respected scientific organizations such as the American Geophysical Union, the American Physical Society, the National Academies of Science and the American Meteorological Society are easily available online. Our ...

Not Scared about Global Warming

Presentation of scary stories about global warming in the popular media makes us unnecessarily frightened. Even worse, it terrifies our kids.Al Gore famously depicted how a sea-level rise of 20 feet (six meters) would almost completely flood Florida, New York, Holland, Bangladesh, and Shanghai, even though the United Nations estimates that sea levels will rise 20 times less than that, and do no such thing. When confronted with these exaggerations, some of us say that they are for a good cause, and surely there is no harm done if the result is that we focus even more on tackling climate change. ...

‘Your money is safe,’ Tezos broker tells investors
The cryptocurrency exchange platform Bitcoin Suisse says it will protect Tezos investors’ money in the face of an acrimonious falling-out between the project’s founders, Arthur and Kathleen Breitman, and the foundation set up to house and spend Tezos funds. At the same time, investors cannot expect to receive any refunds, Bitcoin Suisse CEO Niklas Nikolajsen wrote in a statement on Tuesday. The Zug-based Tezos Foundation sits on top of a stockpile of cryptocurrencies now worth some $500 million (CHF496 million). It is supposed to spend this hoard developing the blockchain-based smart contract system, but its president, Johann Gevers, has been accused of misrepresenting the size of a bonus he wanted to give himself – a charge he denies. The public spat between the Breitmans and Gevers has sparked intense debate on social media channels. Bitcoin Suisse has broken its silence to reveal that it has the responsibility of counter-signing every transaction that the foundation makes.
Statisticians create model to help protect marine species
University researchers in Switzerland, Canada and Australia have developed a new statistical model, which they believe can help fishermen reduce the amount of protected marine life that becomes unintentionally caught in their nets.  At sea, protected marine species – such as hammerhead sharks - and fish with no commercial value are often caught by accident and die needlessly. The scale of this bycatch problem is hard to measure, as fishing fleets often don’t report what they don’t bring back to shore.  According to a 2005 estimate by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, over 6.8 million tons of sea life get thrown back over the side of boats into the sea every year as so-called fisheries discards. This figure is mainly for fish, and doesn’t include seabirds, mammals and turtles.  Statisticians from the University of Geneva, the Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, and the Australian National University in Canberra have devised a new method for predict
Can fintech save Swiss private banking?
Has the future of banking already arrived? A growing number of financial technology start-ups is trying to shake up the industry, but not all traditional players are convinced. “Fintech is not a silver bullet for the industry but it is absolutely necessary for banks to go down the road of digital transformation,” Matthias Bossardt, head of cyber security at KPMG Switzerland, told swissinfo.ch. In a recent report, KPMG’s predicts that many Swiss private banks will disappear as costs rise, margins shrink and clients play hard to get. The fact is, Swiss private banks can no longer rely on the old business model of hiding their clients’ money. They also have to contend with higher regulatory and compliance costs, a shift of wealth creation towards emerging economies and the sluggish performance of financial markets. swissinfo.ch takes a look at some of the new Swiss fintech models that could help traditional private banks climb out of a hole – or replace them. Regulation/comp
How a teen is taking on antibiotic resistance
Nineteen-year-old Nina Kathe has just begun freshman classes at the University of Zurich, but she’s already the author of award-winning research into a global public health concern. Given the two prestigious honours it has earned, you might think Kathe’s research project on antibiotic resistance in E. coli bacteria was the result of a research grant or scientific collaboration. But in fact, she conducted the experiment herself on her home computer and in her biology classroom in the northern Swiss canton of Aargau, as part of her secondary school final examination. “When I proposed my idea to my biology teacher, he looked at me strangely and said I could try it, but that it sounded really utopian and not to be disappointed if it didn’t work out,” Kathe recalled to swissinfo.ch. “I was supposed to do my final project in a group of two, but I convinced the teachers that this would be too complicated. So, I dug deeper and read many articles and searched through many databas
