التيار الوطني الحر فكرة نشأت في 1990 بعد نفي العماد ميشال عون إلى باريس وقد تطور من حركة سرية إلى تيار شعبي منظم بقوانين داخلية. أصبح التيار الوطني الحر حزباً في أيلول 2005 بعدعودة ميشال عون من منفاه الباريسي في 7 أيار 2005. وفي اعقاب عودته بعد خروج القوات السورية من لبنان، تحالف مع تيار المردة خلال الانتخابات النيابية وتحالف فيما بعد مع حزب الله وشكل هذا التحالف داعماً أساسياً لحزب الله.

BEIRUT: Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun reassured the Lebanese Thursday that the country’s stability would not be shaken by political tensions linked to last month’s assassination of police intelligence chief Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hasan.
Speaking to reporters after meeting with Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai in Bkirki, north of Beirut, Aoun said they had agreed on ways to resolve the current political crisis sparked by Hasan’s killing, but he declined to give details.

BEIRUT - Two grenades were thrown on Thursday at an office of Lebanese Christian leader Michel Aoun's Free Patriotic Movement, which is allied with Hezbollah, a security official said. "Unidentified people threw two grenades at 7:30 pm" (1730 GMT) at the office in the village of Beit Shabab, 25 kilometres (15 miles) north of the capital, the official told AFP.
